Danger Route | Short Bits Vol. 18

Danger Route (1967) – Director: Seth Holt – 6/10 (good)
The motion picture represents more of a John Le Carre style spy thriller, eschewing the jubilant, playful disposition of the James Bond rip-offs of the era and thereby, opting for the more cynical approach instead. The film is executed in a predominantly competent fashion, though it does not distinguish itself in any regard with most of its twists proving somewhat standard if not outright derivative. With that being said, the narrative does not really languish at any point and consistently sticks to its primary plotline and its chief goals which greatly animates the overall flow. The cast sports some familiar faces, though none of the performers is what you could call a star or starlet; even if all of them pull their own weight just fine, they principally stay in the background and none of the performances really scintillates. At the end of the day, the final product proves analogously diverting in that it is rather bland in its final form, slightly entertaining, coherent and taut enough, but nothing genuinely groundbreaking or all that memorable; overall, it is hard to fault and should do its job of supplying a moderately engrossing spy yarn just fine, so if you have that specific itch, you may scratch it in this way, just do not expect any fireworks.
