50 FURIOUS WESTERNS

One of our first posts here at FC was the special feature Pistoleers & Pioneers in which we chose 20 westerns that were split up in two parts: classics and modern films. What’s always been so cool about Westerns is the fact there are many different kinds to discover, from the B-movies to major Hollywood studio classics to the Italian re-inventions and even things like genre hybrids that might’ve added something like sci-fi to the mix. This is the main reason why I wanted to do a new list, as a way to to delve just a little bit further into the genre and highlight more of the films I consider to be nuggets of western gold.

A very nice selection, Peter. Afraid I’ve seen them all …

Brilliant selections. Thanks for the list.

  5. Joe Bloggs says:

Would you consider My Darling Clementine (1946), Heartland (1979) and Heaven’s Gate (1980) worthy of that list?

    • mm Peter says:

Well, I’ve seen My Darling Clementine once, I think it would make it. Heartland I don’t know much about and Heaven’s Gate, I really didn’t like.

  6. Nacio Brown says:

You left out William Wyler’s “The Big Country” (165 minutes) with Gregory Peck, Charlton Heston, Burl Ives, Jean Simmons, Charles Bickford, Caroll Baker, Chuck Connors, Alfonso Bedoya, and an uncredited Roddy McDowall. It was a big production coming just before Wyler’s “Ben Hur.” A very serious omission. Another huge omission, Howard Hawks’ “Red River” with John Wayne, MOntgomery Clift, Walter Brennan, Harry Carey, Noah Beery Jr., Harry Carey Jr. Joanne Dru, and with a script by Borden Chase. Both films watchable on Amazon.com.

  7. Anita Rohrborn says:

For A few dollars more. Lee Van Cleef was brilliant!
