Prison escape movies are great adventures, but The Great Escape is among the classiest of all. It has a really cool all-star cast and a whistling tune that puts the River Kwai March to shame. A classic WW2 movie with a title theme that will forever remain stuck in your head. The 60s were certainly a good decade for war movies, ranging from big budget mainstream ones to almost off-beat classics and even Macaroni Combat productions. What is nice about this one is, that it like so many good war movies, is not about the war. This is an adventure about a diverse set of characters trying to break out of a POW camp. Now there are many POW camp movies, but which one can boast Steve McQueen, Charlie Bronson and Company all in one? Not many. I love it because it is a very serious movie but still puts a smile on your face every time you watch it. Not because it is comedic, but because it preserves an inch of optimism and sarcasm. A timeless classic.
