the killing time

The Killing Time | Short Bits Vol. 33

The Killing Time (1993) – Director: Rick King – 3/10 (very mediocre/bad)
Another great performance wasted in a deeply troubled and ultimately meaningless production. Kiefer Sutherland‘s portrayal of the mysterious killer impersonating a deputy constitutes the only compelling aspect of this bungled thriller/neo-noir/whatever. Not only does the story not make a whole lot of sense, beginning to badly unravel towards the end, but also the rendition proves to be on the uninspired side insofar as it turns the flick into a barely watchable dud. The writing suffers from poor character development in particular, freely altering characters’ qualities so as to adapt them to script’s arbitrary trajectory with little to no consideration for overall realism; the narrative is so vagabond it struggles to maintain elementary focus, order and due flow, not to mention the complete absence of tension or good drama dynamics along the line, both of which are effected by the disastrously pedestrian direction. Undoubtedly one of the worst neonoirs from that time period.
