Marvel’s GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY are out of this world

“What a bunch of A-holes”

It’s finally here, the highly anticipated first trailer for Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy set to the sounds of Blue Swede’s 70s pop bubblegum hit “Hooked On A Feeling”. This is going to easily be the strangest installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe so far. Sure we’ve seen the cosmic side of the MCU already with THOR and his home world of Asgard but that didn’t have a talking raccoon! I wrote about Captain America: The Winter Soldier in a recent trailer post, well that’s going to seem extremely grounded compared to what we’ll be seeing in Guardians.

The Nova Corp’s Rhomann Dey (John C. Reilly) tells us about the Guardians while they stand in a Usual Suspects style line-up. Peter Jason Quill aka “Star-Lord” (Chris Pratt) left Earth in the 80s and later becomes a space pilot and renegade outlaw, Gamora (Zoe Saldana) a green skinned assassin is known as the deadliest woman in the Universe, Drax The Destroyer (Dave Bautista) is a hulking alien out for revenge, Rocket Raccoon (voiced by Bradley Cooper) is a gun blasting scavenger and his best friend Groot (voiced by Vin Diesel) is a walking tree creature with a bad attitude.

“Their stories converge in the space prison Kyln. After the characters break out, they venture to Knowhere (the severed head of a celestial being that serves as a hangout for aliens) and visit the weird menagerie of The Collector (Benicio Del Toro). They also have to avoid two villains, Ronan The Accuser (Lee Pace) and Nebula (Karen Gillan), who are in hot pursuit of Quill’s orb, which has the power to destroy the galaxy.” – USA Today

If you saw The Avengers you may recall a quick post-credits scene with a mysterious purple skinned baddie who gets a report from The Other that Earth’s Mightiest Heroes actually have lots of moxie. That guy is none other than THANOS one of the most powerful beings in Marvel Comics history. He’s also going to play a bigger part in Guardians as he’s the adopted father of Gamora and is seeking out all The Infinity Stones (Tesseract, Aether etc) so he can be omnipotent. We’ll most likely be seeing much more of the big guy than we ever did before. This will also begin to tie Guardians and The Avengers together for a team up in the future. It’s going to be exciting as hell to see how Thanos figures into this latest film and what he’s like as a fully realized character.

With Guardians Marvel will be doing something even further outside the box, taking a title that is lesser known than Iron Man was and betting that audiences will jump right into this outrageous (and intriguing) new world while embracing these oddball characters like old pals. From the footage it looks like Director James Gunn along with the amazing cast and crew have done truly outstanding work bringing the Guardians to life in an extremely colorful, comedic and captivating way. From the set designs to the makeup to the SFX this is yet another side of the expanding MCU we will be introduced to. I have no doubt that this film will be an exciting sci-fi action-adventure that turns all of us into huge fans of a new gang of super heroic Marvel misfits.

Official Synopsis: From Marvel, the studio that brought you the global blockbuster franchises of Iron Man, Thor, Captain America and The Avengers, comes a new team–the Guardians of the Galaxy. An action-packed, epic space adventure, Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy” expands the Marvel Cinematic Universe into the cosmos, where brash adventurer Peter Quill finds himself the object of an unrelenting bounty hunt after stealing a mysterious orb coveted by Ronan, a powerful villain with ambitions that threaten the entire universe. To evade the ever-persistent Ronan, Quill is forced into an uneasy truce with a quartet of disparate misfits–Rocket, a gun-toting raccoon; Groot, a tree-like humanoid; the deadly and enigmatic Gamora; and the revenge-driven Drax the Destroyer. But when Quill discovers the true power of the orb and the menace it poses to the cosmos, he must do his best to rally his ragtag rivals for a last, desperate stand–with the galaxy’s fate in the balance.
