A forgotten enemy returns for revenge in STAR TREK II: THE WRATH OF KHAN – Director’s Cut

In 1982, Star Trek fans got what is now considered to be one of the greatest sequels in film history. STAR TREK II: WRATH OF KHAN was the follow up to STAR TREK: THE MOTION PICTURE but more importantly it was a continuation of a classic episode of the 1960s TV series called “The Space Seed”. In it, Ricardo Montalban guest starred as Khan Noonien Singh, a 20th century biologically enhanced human that was placed in suspended animation and discovered by the crew of the USS Enterprise centuries later. Khan soon shows himself to be a highly intelligent and sadistic individual who wants to overthrow Captain Kirk’s command and wreak havoc. Luckily, Kirk and the others are able to stop Khan before he’s able to accomplish his goal. As punishment, Khan is banished to a small planet where he can live as he wishes with his people.

STAR TREK II picks up approximately 15 years later and Khan (Montalban) returns to get revenge on Kirk and the Enterprise members by any means necessary. What really makes the film so memorable is Montalban’s performance which is Shakespearean and extremely intense. He elevates what might’ve been a typical sequel to something that is truly special and a high point for the beloved sci-fi series.
