BEWARE OF SPOILERS! I never reviewed J.J. Abrams first Star Trek (2009) film but I’ll just say that I thought he and the new cast did a fantastic job bringing the iconic pop culture sci-fi series into the 21st century. Amazingly they were able to keep the classic feel but also give it a modern twist that felt organic and was very entertaining. So what if J.J. loves those crazy [read...]
When I was told about the Howard Hawks Blogathon by my friend Ratnakar of Seetimaar – Diary of a Movie Lover I was really happy because Hawks is a filmmaker I’ve been a fan of for many years now. I think what made Hawks’ work appealing to me was the fact he could take any genre and entertain you through his mastery of it. Whether it was comedy, adventure, western [read...]
For most super hero movie geeks, Jon Favreau’s big screen adaptation of Iron Man (2008) basically blew most other films in that subgenre out of the water. While I loved Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight films, I’m still a Marvel devotee first. From a young age Spider Man was my favorite super hero. I really enjoyed Sam Raimi’s films and thought they did a great job bringing the character to the [read...]
Ernest Borgnine is an actor that over the years I’ve come to appreciate more and more. His tenacious persona in the many films and television shows he acted in impressed me from a young age. I think my first introduction to “Ernie” (as he liked to be called) was McHale’s Navy (1962-66) the classic World War II era sitcom. I was too young to watch it on its original run, [read...]
Leave it to the fine folks at Criterion to pull yet another hat trick in the new year with what I consider to be the ultimate home video release of Alex Cox’s 1984 cult sci-fi comedy-punk rock masterpiece REPO MAN. Now if you’re a film geek who grew up in the 80s, you probably know this movie well and have loved it ever since the first viewing. This movie holds [read...]
Writer-Director Michael Crichton’s 1973 sci-fi/western cult classic WESTWORLD is set in the “near future” where the technological advances have helped to create a new kind of adult themed amusement park called DELOS is populated by computerized androids who appear to be human and are used to bring visitor’s fantasies to life. DELOS is comprised of three separate worlds vacationers can inhabit: Medieval World (Ancient Europe), Roman World (Ancient Rome) and [read...]
Arthur Hamilton (John Randolph) is a middle aged banker who has become dissatisfied and lost his way in life. One day he is contacted by an old friend Charlie Evans (Murray Hamilton) he had believed to be dead. Charlie explains that he knows just how he feels and that he can assist him with his problem. The message directs him to “The Company” an organization that helps people restart their [read...]
We’ve all seen movies that feature deranged monsters, ghastly ghouls and inhuman freaks but there are other kinds of fiendish characters that may be the most frightening of all. The reason is because they’re around us everywhere in society, screaming and complaining, breaking things in your house, having accidents in their pants, and drooling in their food. No I’m not talking about your grandparents, these are the kids who kill! [read...]
Ridley Scott is a great director who has made many amazing films including BLADE RUNNER (1982), GLADIATOR (2000), BLACK HAWK DOWN (2001) and of course Alien which was only his second feature film. The famous tagline for this movie was: “In space no one can hear you scream.” This was clever as well as a good solution to the horror isolation element. In horror movies there needs to be a [read...]
For quite some time, I’ve been griping about the never-ending stream of recycled ideas coming out of Hollywood over the past few years. I’d say that one of the most original films I’ve seen recently is without question Christopher Nolan’s 2010 mind-boggler Inception, a film that left me speechless after my first viewing. Well, now I can add writer/director Rian Johnson’s Looper to the short list of wholly original films. [read...]
