Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe are THE NICE GUYS

The latest trailer for THE NICE GUYS has a “retro 70s style”. OK, adding soft focus, some split screen blips and film scratches doesn’t do too much but we appreciate the attempt at an old school Grindhouse aesthetic. The movie clearly won’t benefit from that, so we hope it’s own charm is enough.

Over the past 30 years, Shane Black (Iron Man 3) has penned a string of classic “buddy” movies in the crime genre like Lethal Weapon, The Last Boy Scout, The Long Kiss Goodnight and Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (which he also directed). His latest film THE NICE GUYS is set in 1970s Los Angeles and concerns a down on his luck gumshoe named Holland March (Ryan Gosling) and a hired enforcer Jackson Healy (Russell Crowe) who cross paths and must work together to solve the case of a missing girl. Their investigation soon uncovers a much bigger conspiracy that involves some very important figures. From the atmosphere its got going on we’re immediately reminded of those special 70s crime movies we love like The Long Goodbye, Hickey & Boggs and Freebie & The Bean.

The soundtrack is pure 70s gold and includes classic tracks by Kool & The Gang, A Taste of Honey, Earth, Wind & Fire, Climax Blues Band, Kiss, The Band, Rupert Holmes and America.

Black’s trademark humor and wit is always a treat and this one looks like it will be another entertaining gem for enthusiasts of the crime-action-comedy genre. THE NICE GUYS rolls into theaters on May 20th.
